I ordered my Hawk Flight Series shell pack (grindstone glitter, 10/12/14/20) on September 2, and it was on my doorstep by the 5th — lightning-fast shipping! Everything arrived as advertised and in excellent condition. One tom mount had poked through a box, but there were no wear marks; a bit more bubble wrap would’ve solved it.
Since I already had a TD-27 with the digital snare, ride, and hats, this snare-less shell pack was the perfect fit.
Fit and finish are excellent right out of the box. The ¼" jacks are tight and secure, with no creaks or rattles — just a confidence-inspiring build that feels unlikely to loosen under heavy playing or vibration.
The hardware is on the lighter side (the shells and hardware are based on Pearl’s entry-level Roadshow line), but it feels more than robust enough. I’m not the heaviest hitter, but I do play with some force, and the shells and mounts haven’t budged — they feel solid and reliable.
Triggering has been spot-on. I notice no real difference from my Roland pads in terms of dynamics or sensitivity. The only hotspotting I encountered was on the kick, which was my fault for not centering the beater. Once corrected, the triggering has been flawless: no false hits, no crosstalk, no issues. Aside from a quick tweak to pad settings on my TD-27, it was plug-and-play. Running through SD3, I can close my eyes and almost convince myself I’m on an acoustic kit (until I hit a cymbal — but that’s no knock on the shells).
Most importantly, these shells are inspiring. Moving from rubber or mesh pads to a full shell setup is transformative — you immediately feel the difference and may wonder why you didn’t switch sooner. Drumming is a multi-sensory experience, and having the look and feel of an acoustic kit has genuinely improved my playing. Maybe that says something about me, but if so, it’s a flaw with a cure!
The only tradeoff is a slightly larger footprint for live gigs, but honestly, that’s part of the appeal. They command attention on stage, and the grindstone sparkle finish looks fantastic under lights.
I haven't had any reason to reach out for customer support, but my email interactions with the team have all been very positive. They care about their products and their customers.
Bottom line: Hawk nailed it. At this price point, the kit punches way above its weight. I’d recommend it to anyone considering the move.
