If you like a one-up, one-down setup with your ride tucked in close over the kick, the Gretsch Catalina EVO J484 should feel like home. An 18" bass drum, 10" rack tom and 12" floor tom keep the layout compact, while the 14" snare gives you the playing surface you’re used to on an acoustic kit. Plug in your headphones and you’ve got the sounds of Gretsch USA Custom, Brooklyn and Broadkaster drums at your fingertips.

Buy the Catalina EVO J484 from Edrumcenter and we include a 3-year warranty.

How it feels behind the kit

The snare and toms use three-ply True Rebound mesh heads, with separate head and rim triggering. The 18" kick has a dual-sensor trigger that supports a double pedal. The 14" hi-hat pairs a bottom cymbal and controller with a conventional hi-hat stand, so you can set the height and work the pedal the way you would on your acoustic kit.

The 14" hi-hat, 16" crash and 18" ride each have bow, bell and edge zones that respond all the way around the cymbal. Move from the bow to the bell on the ride for a change in articulation, or grab the edge of the crash or ride for a choke.

Dial in your Gretsch sound

Start with one of 50 factory kits, or build your own from more than 500 multilayer sounds and save it in one of 128 user kit slots. Round-robin sampling varies the sound from hit to hit, something you’ll hear in a snare roll or a steady ride pattern.

If you like to dial in your own drum mix, there’s plenty to work with. Bring up the snare-bottom mic for more wire sound, blend in the subkick for extra low end, or add ambient mic samples to hear more of the room. Each pad has its own compression and three-band EQ. You can make adjustments on the module’s 2.7" OLED display or use the Gretsch E-Drum Remote app to edit kits and fine-tune trigger response.

Practice, record or take it to a gig

For practice, stream a track over Bluetooth and plug into either the 1/4" or 1/8" headphone jack. The module includes a metronome and coaching tools, and you can record a stereo WAV directly to a USB flash drive to listen back to a take.

For home recording, USB-C carries audio and MIDI, with eight audio channels going to your DAW and four coming back. Bluetooth MIDI is available too. On a gig, the two main outputs can feed the house mix, while four direct outputs let your engineer take individual drums on separate channels.
