First let me say. Edrumcenter's staff has been amazing. They answered my questions and somehow managed to get mine out the door the Friday prior to Christmas when it had to be pushing 4pm their time. As a result, I received it on the 23rd. Which is greatly appreciated! Seriously. Great job to Erik and the team at Edrumcenter!
Now for my thoughts on the kit itself.
This kit has been absolutely amazing in the few days I have been playing it. The sounds are great. Huge improvement over previous Roland's I have been directly exposed to. The Hi-Hats alone are the best electronic hi-hats available. Hands down! Same with the Snare (though I do wish they went with their newer model that is the only electronic snare that is better and even then, only just). The Ride is at least as good as the other brands I have played. But as a package those three digital components, along with the new toms, a damn good kick, and a great module add up to the single best e kit you can get under 5k. Hands down.
However, my two biggest nitpicks are the aforementioned snare not being the newest model with the throw-off. But on a more practical level is the way the rack puts the module in a place that steps on where the hats have to go, when using a double bass pedal. I tried using the additional snare stand included for the 513 model that also uses this rack to extend that bar out and that worked well enough. However, that lead to my neck hurting from having to crane over to see it. So, I removed it. I found that if I bring in the right (from player's position) and then flair out the left side of the rack, where the module sits, that you can get it to work. But even then, the hats block part of the module. I suspect that I will eventually get used to it either how it is now or some other variation I will stumble across. Any tips on placement are welcome though.
But the best part of the whole thing is the way it all comes together. My goodness! Is this a fun kit to play! I have not had this much fun playing on a kit since my first kit all those years ago. Now this is the first E kit I have purchased. Though I had some crappy non-Roland kit for about 10 minutes in the 90s that was traded to me for something (I honestly do not remember). I have played many in stores and at friend's places in the past and even in the store this one won over Alesis Strata Prime, and other kits I played in the months leading up to making the purchase. But now having the time to dive into everything and play the DW kits from Roland cloud and everything else. There is always something else to make me smile.
Then there is the training that is built into the module. The Phase Trainer alone would be great, but the other options that I have barely used seem like they can be used to hone one's technique in a way that is fun and effective.
I could go on for another 5 paragraphs, but I won't. As I am going to go play it some more instead. TLDR is - if you get this drum set, you will enjoy it beyond words.
